چکیده

Completion of a global geological map of Venus has provided documentation of the relative age relationships, spatial distribution, and topographic configuration of the major geologic units and permitted us to address several important problems concerning the volcanic history of Venus. We use these data to: 1) assess the stratigraphic position of volcanic units and landforms, 2) determine their relationship with structure and tectonics, 3) identify changes in volcanic style, flux and activity with time, and 4) determine the topographic configuration and stratigraphic position of volcanism in relation to the evolution of long-wavelength topography. Tectonic Associations: The scale and abundance of tectonic structures helps to divide the spectrum of volcanic units into two main groups: 1) volcanic units where tectonic structures played a subordinate role and 2) tectonized units/terrains, in which tectonic structures are the primary features relative to

Venus Resurfacing Rates Constraints Provided by 3D Monte Carlo Simulations

The range of surface ages on Venus and the rate of recent volcanism are two major questions that can be addressed through an analysis of Magellan images. We report on a 3-D Monte Carlo resurfacing model that seeks to explain the resurfacing history of Venus by simulating the evolving surface under the competing processes of impact cratering and volcanism. By incorporating the observed size dist...

The surface of Venus

Venus is a planet that is similar to Earth in terms of some important planetary parameters (size, mass, position in the solar system, presence of atmosphere) and different in terms of other, equally important ones (absence of an intrinsic magnetic field, large atmospheric mass, carbon dioxide composition of the atmosphere, lack of water, very high surface pressure and temperature). The surface ...

Floor-fractured impact craters on Venus: Implications for igneous crater modification and local magmatism

Regional tectonism and volcanism affect crater modification and crater loss on Venus, but a comparison of Venusian craters to lunar floor-fractured craters uggests that a third style of more localized, crater-controlled magmatism also may occur on Venus. Based on lunar models for such magmatism, Venusian crustal conditions hould generally favor crater-filling volcanism over crater-centered floo...

Volcanism and its role in Climate on Venus

There has clearly been significant volcanic activity on the surface of Venus in recent geological epochs and there is a great deal of indirect evidence that this may continue at the present time. However, the current level of activity is unknown and remains controversial, with estimates for the rate of emission of volcanic gases into the atmosphere ranging from essentially quiescent to very hig...

Geologic units on Venus: evidence for their global correlation

Detailed geologic mapping of approximately 30% of the surface of Venus has revealed a stratigraphic sequence that appears to be repeated in widely separated areas on the planet. This sequence shows a transition from oldest highly deformed terrain units, the tessera, to a series of widespread volcanic plains units, each with recognizable morphologic characteristics and interpreted eruption style...
